Trump: US to Open Gaza Food Centers
President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will establish “food centers” inside Gaza to address the ongoing and severe humanitarian crisis, marked by widespread starvation. Speaking from Scotland, Trump described images of malnourished children in Gaza as “real” and expressed a commitment for the U.S. to be “even more involved” in aid efforts.
This announcement signifies a notable shift in tone from the President, who has largely refrained from directly pressuring Israel regarding aid access throughout the past 21 months of conflict. On Monday, however, Trump acknowledged that Israel bears “a lot of responsibility” for the limitations on aid entering Gaza. He emphasized that his immediate priority is “getting people fed” due to the significant number of starving individuals.
The facilities, as described by Trump, would be open-access with “no boundaries” and “no fences,” allowing people to directly receive food. He stated that the U.S. would provide funds for this initiative and that other nations are expected to join the effort.
Trump’s remarks come as the humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached catastrophic levels, with UN officials and aid organizations warning of widespread famine. Reports indicate that the entire population of over two million people in Gaza is severely food insecure, with many going days without food and a tragic surge in malnutrition-related deaths, particularly among children. Despite limited aid deliveries and some humanitarian pauses announced by the Israeli military, the flow of assistance remains far below what is needed to avert mass starvation.
