Trump’s NATO Arms Gambit: A New Path for Ukraine Aid
President Donald Trump has announced a deal to send U.S. weapons to Ukraine through NATO, with NATO allies fully funding the cost.
According to reports, the U.S. will sell weapons, including Patriot air defense systems, to NATO, and then NATO will transfer these weapons to Ukraine. Trump stated that NATO will reimburse the U.S. for 100% of the cost.
This development follows a period of ambiguity regarding U.S. military aid to Ukraine and a recent, brief pause in some weapons shipments by the Pentagon. Trump has recently expressed increased frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin and the ongoing conflict, signaling a potential shift in his administration’s approach. He also indicated that he would make a “major statement” on Russia soon.
Ukrainian officials have consistently requested more air defense systems, particularly Patriots, to defend against intensifying Russian attacks. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has also urged allies to increase their support for Ukraine.
